So, we have a winner. Spain beat Italy with ease in Sunday night’s final on a 4-0 scoreline – something that 44 of our players had predicated prior to the start of the tournament over three weeks ago. As you will remember from our very first update, Spain were actually the third favourites in our competition as many players have opted for either Germany or Holland to win the tournament.
As you will know from our most recent update, only those in the top ten after the semi-finals still had a chance of wining our Prediction Competition. Aidan McGrenra was the only one of the top three to retain his place, and having been in top spot since 24th June, he cemented that place by backing Spain to win on Sunday and finishes in top spot and wins the €750 top prize.
Bartley Ramsay made a strong finish to the tournament and finishes in second spot and gets the runners-up prize of €150. Bart will be kicking himself though, as had Germany beat Italy in the semi-final and Spain still emerged victors on Sunday, he would have been celebrating the top prize instead of second place. However, I’m sure he’ll be happy with his consolation prize.
Mary Gordon also had a strong finish to claim third place and €100. Prior to Sunday, Mary hadn’t been above 10th place but thanks to the Spanish she has something to celebrate now.
Spare a thought for Shauna Kelly who for so long looked like she could win the competition, only to finish outside the prize at the final hurdle. Hard luck Shauna. A special mention to USA based Colman Byrne who finished in fifth. In the entire three weeks of our competition, Colman was never outside of the top twenty.
At the other end of the table, Fergus O’Donnell claims the wooden spoon by finishing in last position.
Finally, I just want to say a big thank you to every one of our 201 players. It has been a bit of craic and I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did. Many, many apologies again for the lack of updates from the semi-finals onwards but I hope it didn’t spoil your enjoyment of the tournament or the competition. I will be in touch with the three prize winners very soon.
