So, the ‘Boys in Green’ will say goodbye to Euro 2012 after Monday night’s game against Italy in Poznan. However, it’s far from the end of our Prediction Competition and things are starting to spice up nicely as we enter the final stages of the Group games.
The big news of the last few days hasn’t been that Ireland are on their way home, or that the Dutch might be on there way home too – it’s the fact that Alan Reid has managed to predict his first correct result of the tournament. With no points to show from the opening twelve games, Alan finally picked up his first points at the 13th time of asking by correctly predicating that Italy and Croatia would draw their game yesterday. And not only that, he also correctly guessed that it would be a 1-1 draw. 61 other players also predicated the correct scoreline and receive 8 points, while a further 14 pick up 3 points by opting for the draw on differing scorelines.
The fact that Ireland lost to Spain last night was no real surprise, as 159 of our players had predicated the same in advance of the game. However, no one opted for a 4-0 scoreline and it’s only the second game of the tournament where none of our 201 players managed to pick up the maximum 8 points on offer in a game. Three points though for the 159 aforementioned.
The result also meant that Ireland were the first team that are guaranteed to be going home after the Group stage ends at the start of the week. Seven more will be following them over the coming four days. 105 players had Ireland to progress to the quarter-finals, 49 to the semi-finals, 6 to the final and 5 to actually win the tournament – that’s a lot of points that will be lost as our competition progresses over the next fortnight. A lot more had Holland (who look a good bet to be going home on Sunday) to progress onto being winners, so all is not lost for those who had put their faith in Trap’s Men.
And now, onto this evening’s games. It took a while for the Ukraine / France game to get going, with thunderstorms delaying the game for almost an hour. However, when things dried up a bit the French ran out comfortable 2-0 winners, meaning eight points for 34 players, and three points for a further 115 of you.
England and Sweden brought the curtain down on the second series of games in Kiev – a game which finished in a thrilling 3-2 win to England. It was a great day for Leona Curran, Margaret Gordon and Eamonn Brown who not only were they the only three who correctly predicated the 3-2 victory for England, but also the 2-0 victory for France earlier in the day – meaning a nice 16 points from today’s two games. 109 other players get three points, thanks to the English victory. The result also means that Sweden have only pride to play for against France on Tuesday as they, like Ireland, are on their way home.
So, what has that done to the table. Manus Dunnion remains at the top of the pile and has opened a seven point gap to Colman Byrne who remains second. Colman is joined there by Patsy Lafferty, who moves up twenty-five places for a share of second. Leona Curran, thank to her 16 points today, is the biggest mover and moves from 71st to 24th.
Going in the other direction is Paul McLaughlin and Gerard Gallagher who were sitting joint 1st in our first update last Saturday and now sit 71st and 78th respectively. At the foot of the table, Alan Reid has moved off bottom spot and is replaced there by Trevor Lynch and Noel Crossan who, with just nine points each, find themselves a massive 48 points behind the leader.
Full league table is listed below.
Our next update will come on Sunday evening when some serious points will be dished out for the first time. Not only will the points be awarded for the last round of fixtures in Groups A and B, but we will also be able to allocate 10 points to everyone who correctly predicts who finishes 1st and 2nd in each of the groups (so 40 points on offer there). In addition to that, the first four quarter-finalists will also be confirmed, so there is an additional 15 points per team (another 60 points) for every correct team you forecast to reach the quarter-finals. So, if you have correctly predicated 1st and 2nd in Groups A and B, that’s 100 points you will be allocated on Sunday night.
