We are now halfway through the group stages, with twelve of the twenty-four first round games complete. So far there has been a total of 96 points on offer to our players, although no-one has come even near that total.
The first of yesterday’s two games saw Czech Republic beat Greece in Wroclow. 109 players correctly predicated that the Czechs would be victorious and gain 3 points each. 21 of that 109 got the five bonus points for rightly forecasting a 2-1 scoreline in the Czechs favour.
Last night the co-hosts Poland played their second game of the tournament and drew 1-1 with Russia – a result and scoreline that 51 players predicated, earning them 8 points. A further 24 players had gone for a draw, and get 3 points.
Today saw the ‘Group of Death’ take centre stage again. In the early kick-off Portugal beat Denmark 3-2 in a five goal thriller – a result correctly predicated by Nuala McGlynn and Chuck Bernster, who both get eight points each. A further 139 players get three points for putting their faith in Ronaldo’s side.
This evening’s game saw two of the biggest footballing nations in Europe clash and it was one to forget for the Netherlands as they lost 2-1 to the Germans. 153 players failed to score any points from this game, with 20 players getting 3 points and 28 picking up eight points for the correct scoreline. The result means that the Dutch need a minor miracle to qualify now and look like they could be heading home on Sunday. They were a much fancied side before the tournament, as our own competition shows with 174 of the 201 players predicting them to make the quarter-finals and 58 players actually tipping them to win the competition outright.
So, what does that do to our league table. Well, not much in fact for Alan Reid. The Killygordon man is now the only player to have zero points and sits bottom of the pile – it’s takes some effort to predict the scores and results in any game, but to get none from twelve takes a special kind. Well done Alan!! For the first time since the start of the tournament we have someone occupying top spot on their own – Manus Dunnion has a two point lead over Colman Byrne with Mark Neeson a further three points behind in third place. Shane Sandilands jumps from 96th for a share of fourth.
Tomorrow, Ireland are back in action again and defeat to the World Champions would see them out of the Euros which wouldn’t be good news for over half our players as 105 had predicated Ireland to progress from the group. Fingers crossed though that the ‘Boys in Green’ can upset the odds and claim at least a point which would keep us alive in the tournament for at least four more days.
