Finn Harps 0-1 Cobh Ramblers

The fine recent form enjoyed by Finn Harps came to an extremely disappointing end in Ballybofey as struggling Cobh Ramblers secured a surprise victory thanks to a 21st Cian Leonard goal. The visitors also hit the post but apart from that Ollie Horgan’s outfit dominated the game for long spells but a failure to finish of some promising moves was to prove costly.

And the Harps injury crisis deepened as left-back Lee Toland sustained what appeared to be a serious leg injury and had to be stretchered of the field just before the break. Both Paddy McCourt and Mark Timlin were absent from the matchday squad due to injury while Keith Cowan wasn’t fit enough to start although the defender did come on for the final fifteen minutes of the game.

Ciaran Coll and Aidan Friel both returned after missing the Shelbourne game. Jesse Devers missed a decent early chance for the hosts but it was Cobh, sitting eighth in the table and six places below Harps who took the lead on 21 minutes when David Hurley setup the unmarked Cian Leonard to slot the ball past Ciaran Gallagher.

Michael O’Connor, from a header, did come close to a quick equalizer but then at the other Harps were fortunate not to go 2-0 down when a Hurley strike came back of the post. Just before half time Toland had to go off with that injury and young Niall McGinley was introduced as the replacement. After the break Horgan’s men upped the tempo with Michael O’Connor with coming close twice.

And there were further chances with Ciaran O’Connor shooting wide from a good position on 70 minutes. His brother Michael was then denied by keeper Paul Hunt. The last chance of an equalizer fell to the same player but again Hunt was equal to the test from the Dundalk man.
