Lee Toland’s Free lead to the opener

Cobh Ramblers 0-2 Finn Harps

Finn Harps pulled off a great result against Cobh Ramblers at St. Colman’s Park thanks to late goals from John O’Flynn and Ciaran O’Connor. It was O’Flynn’s first league goal after signing from Limerick F.C. while it was O’Connor’s opener of the competitive campaign after rejoining Harps before Christmas.

O’Flynn’s 81st minute strike was the crucial breakthrough and then with Cobh pushing for an equalizer O’Connor struck in the dying seconds of normal time to secure Ollie Horgan his first win of the new First Division season. The result leaves Harps with four points from two league matches and they also have a game less played than all teams around them apart from Drogheda Utd.

These two sides will meet in a rescheduled fixture on Monday 26th March at United Park. The only down side to the win over Cobh was the fact that Paddy McCourt was forced off before the break with an injury. After a relatively quiet first half, Harps have the better of the exchanges right after the interval but Cobh created the clearer scoring opportunities. Ciaran Gallagher made a good save from a Darren Murphy header while Kevin Taylor’s strike was just inches wide of an upright.

Nine minutes from the end Harps broke the deadlock when O’Flynn steered the ball past Paul Hunt after the home defence failed to clear Lee Toland’s free kick into the danger area. Toland had replaced the injured McCourt in the first half Then just seconds into injury-time Ciaran O’Connor popped up with the second goal that relieved the pressure on the visitors who saw out the game comfortably for a big three points.

Earlier Harps had a goal disallowed for an offside offence. There’s a tight schedule coming up for Horgan’s men with a home match against Wexford Youths in Ballybofey on Friday night. Then it’s Drogheda on the following Monday night in that rearranged game at the Co. Louth venue. The loss to Harps was Cobh’s first defeat of the season. It was a special moment for young Buncrana lad Adam Duffy who made his senior League of Ireland debut as a late replacement for John O’Flynn.
