Finn Harps 4-3 Mayo League

Finn Harps went through to the second round of the EA Sports League Cup but only after an almighty fright from the Mayo League on Monday night. The first round re-arranged fixture in Ballybofey saw Harps lead 4-0 at a stage but in the final half-hour visitors scored three times to making it a desperate struggle for Harps to see out the game.

While happy with the first hour manager Ollie Horgan was definitely fuming about the performance of his side in the final 30 or so minutes of this cup tie.

Horgan left the injured Paddy McCourt and B.J. Banda out of the match day squad while Keith Cowan wasn’t risked from the start. However, captain Ciaran Coll and Gareth Harkin were named in a reasonably strong starting eleven

The hosts took the lead after just five minutes when Mayo native Jesse Devers scored on his competitive debut for Harps. The visitors were struggling early on and it was somewhat of a surprise that it took the home team so long to double their advantage. That second goal came four minutes before the break when Devers setup Michael O’Connor for his second goal in the space of three days for his new club.

Mayo fell 3-0 behind when former Letterkenny Rovers player Lee Toland scored with a stunning strike on 51 minutes and just before the hour mark John O’Flynn made it 4-0. Brendan Lavelle got one back for the visitors before Harps had a goal disallowed.

The Mayo League gave themselves a glimmer of hope of causing an upset with a second goal coming from Sean Morrissey on 71 minutes and then the alarm bells really began to ring when Lavelle got his second of the game to make it 4-3. However, the hosts managed to hold out to advance to the next round of the cup competition.
